The Spanish Big Heads
Organised by the Queensland Arts Council, Jennifer travelled to the
regional town of Mitchel in Queensland for this project. Spending a
week as artist in residence assisting the community to prepare for a
street parade and Spanish dance production. These masks were not a one
off. These giant paper maché masks had to be designed so that
multiple copies could continue to be made easily by the community. The
technique was not only lightweight, but very durable. And they’re
big too!

The
Blues & Roots Festival Skeletons
The Annual East Coast Blues & Roots Festival each Easter in Byron
Bay NSW is renowned for it’s high quality international acts, drawing
crowds of over 10,000 people per day over the 5 day festival period. Their
logo features dancing skeletons, based on the Festival of the Dead in
Mexico. Jennifer was commissioned to create two 3m high puppet skeletons
for an outdoor installation, positioned in such a way that they would
move in the wind, or be able to accommodate musical instruments or other
props. The skeletons (Jeremiah and Lucky José) were constructed
in paper maché and sealed to survive Easters’ predictable
heavy rains and gale force winds.

The
Sunspirit Logo
Originally created as the headpiece for the main stage of the NYE celebrations
in Byron Bay for the year 2000, this piece was used as a promotional tool
by the major sponsors Sunspirit Aromatherapy Oils. Mel from Sunspirit
wanted a huge replica of their logo. Using her maché technique
Jennifer coordinated a team to create the piece, which is lightweight
in construction and can be easily dismantled by two people for transporting.
It measures 12 metres tip to tip and 5 metres high, with a waterproof
finish that has lasted through years of outdoor exposure, and has lights
for night time use. The logo is now positioned outside the Sunspirit headquarters
in Byron Bay, and is regularly transported to other festival events including
the Herb Festival in Lismore.

The
Santos Vegetables
This was a projected that could not be resisted. A massive vegetable garden
overgrowing the balcony of a classic federation building. Santos Health
Food Stores wanted a dramatic opening for their new store in Mullumbimby
NSW, and the effect was very successful. A team of four constructed this
awesome display predominately from camping mattress foam and polystyrene.
The results were better than expected. Santos asked for the installation
to remain for two months instead of the original two weeks, and was dearly
missed by the locals when it was pulled down! Most of the installation
was transferred to beautify the inside of the Santos Store in Byron Bay,
while the rest has been used regularly by the local community radio station,
Bay FM to spruce up their presence at the annual Taste of Byron food festival.
